Wayfinding Refresh That Cut Patient Confusion Across a Multi-Wing Clinic

A growing outpatient clinic replaced a patchwork of taped paper signs with a calming, ADA-conscious environmental graphics program that guided patients from parking lot to exam room.

Where they started.

Vista Grove Medical Group had expanded into three connected wings without a coordinated wayfinding plan, and the result showed. Front-desk staff spent a large share of every shift redirecting lost patients, printed directional signs curled off the walls, and elderly visitors regularly wandered into the wrong department. Patient-satisfaction surveys repeatedly flagged 'confusing to navigate' as a top complaint, and a recent accessibility review noted inconsistent, low-contrast signage that fell short of ADA readability expectations. The group needed an environment that reassured anxious patients rather than adding to their stress.

What we built.

We partnered with the clinic's operations lead to map every patient journey, from the lot entrance through check-in, lab, imaging, and specialty suites. From that map we designed a color-coded, icon-driven wayfinding language with high-contrast typography, tactile and ADA-compliant room identification, and soothing biophilic wall graphics printed on low-VOC media suitable for clinical environments. Directional overheads, floor decals, and department thresholds were fabricated for durability and easy sanitizing, then installed after hours in phases so patient care was never interrupted. Every color and pictogram was tested with staff before full production to confirm intuitive, at-a-glance comprehension.

The results

  • Front-desk redirection requests dropped sharply, freeing staff to focus on patient intake
  • Wayfinding survey complaints fell to a fraction of their prior volume within one quarter
  • Room and department signage brought into consistent ADA-conscious contrast and tactile standards
  • Calming nature-themed wall graphics improved the overall waiting-room atmosphere
“Our patients arrive stressed enough. Now they can find imaging or the lab without asking, and our staff finally has their time back.”
